Ray was born in Langenburg, Saskatchewan on July 5, 1949, to Dick and Thora Kirby. He was raised on the farm along with his 2 brothers and 3 sisters.
Ray married Faye and lived in the same yard as his parents when they were just starting out, they had Rick in 1968 and Lisa in 1970. They then moved to start a life together on their own farm a few miles away and had Melanie in 1978 and Wyatt in 1979. Ray farmed with a mix of both cattle and grain, but though a jack of all trades he said he was a master of none. He did many jobs to subsidize the income off the farm some of those being rig work, water management at the potash mine, and most recently contracting with his trackhoe.
