Philip Charles Appel passed away peacefully with family at his side at the Yorkton Regional Health Center on April 24, 2024 at the age of 84 years.
Philip was born October 30, 1939 to Sebastion and Matilda Appel (predeceased). In his youth, he enjoyed playing fast ball and hockey. Philip’s working life began early. He tackled diverse roles before getting a position as a Pressure Welder at the Esterhazy Potash mine. He also worked at Sylvite (Rocanville) and at Kleysen’s salt plant.
In 1962 Philip purchased a quarter section of land near Esterhazy, laying the foundation for his future. Family became priority September 4, 1965 when he married Merle. Together they embarked on a Dairy farming journey in 1971, which they successfully ran until November 1997. Philip had taken an Artificial Breeding Course which helped to improve the herd production. He also was a Delegate for the Dairy Producers Co-op for many years. After selling the Dairy, Philip and Merle transitioned into raising Angus cattle and Philip took on a part time role at the Como Park Community Pasture.
Philip wasn’t just dedicated to work, he also had a competitive spirit. He enjoyed participating in rodeo’s and testing his skills in Bronc riding, horse racing and even wild cow milking. In 1966 Philip was involved in organising The Saddle Club, which is now known as the Twin Valley Riding Club. He also enjoyed hunting and curling.
Philip’s love for learning and preserving history led him to take a wheelwright course. The new found skill allowed him to meticulously restore wooden wheels for wagons and buggies. His passion for history was further showcased in 1986 when he organised a three day wagon trek, retracing the path used by pioneers to transport supplies between Esterhazy and Whitewood. At this time, he held meetings and a club was formed called
Pioneer Wagoneers. Following the initial trek, he participated in several others over the years.
Loyal and Selfless Friend
Philip wasn't just a dedicated family man and a skilled worker; he also cherished his friendships. He cultivated a wide circle of friends and was known for his unwavering loyalty and support. A Man Who Loved To Laugh
