Paul was born March 9, 1928 on the family farm by Esterhazy to Steve Helmeczi and Margaret (Rakay) Helmeczi.
Paul was the ninth child, his mother passed away giving birth to him. Paul was raised by his grandmother & grandfather Helmeczi until he was 5 years old. Then Paul returned home to live with his father & stepmother and other brothers & sisters.
Paul attended Esterhazy School and knew only the Hungarian language, so he had to learn English.
At age 16, Paul went out to work for neighbours and start a life of his own.
Paul loved farming, grain, cattle, poultry, and pets. His Hereford cattle and collie dogs were his favourite. Paul also took pride in gardening, cooking, sewing, trapping, and fishing.
Paul farmed in the Yarbo area all his life. He also worked at I.M.C. Potash mine from start up until about 1970.
Paul also loved his trips to Lynn Lake & Leaf Rapids, Manitoba, to visit his daughter Shianne, son-in-law John, and grandchildren, Christine & Jonathan.
Paul loved fishing on the Churchill River and had to be out at 4 a.m. to get fresh Pickerel for breakfast. Then he would tour the Copper, Nickel, Zinc and Gold mines with John. Evenings were a walk to the Corner Store for Ice Cream with the grandchildren and their friend, Deidre.
In 1992 Paul retired to Yarbo, where he resided until 2019, when he moved into Morris Lodge in Bangor until June of this year. He became a resident of the Ituna Care Home till his passing on July 7, 2023.
Paul loved accordion music, dancing, playing cards, socializing, and feeding the birds at Morris Lodge.
Paul was a kind, religious man, an awesome father, grandfather, great-grandfather who was always willing to share his time and lend a helping hand.
He also didn’t hesitate to let you know quickly if you did something wrong. This had to be dealt with, hashed out, and then sit, have a coffee and go on.
Paul was an active member and took great pride in keeping the Kaposvar Church Society group going, keeping the grounds clean and cut. Paul’s family was large with 15 children: Steve, Elizabeth (Frank Farkas), Helen (John Muzylowski), Joe (Elizabeth), Ann (George Tucker), Andrew (Magdaline), John (Eleanor), Julie (Jim Tocher), Frank (Janet), Sara (Jim Banow), Mary (Leonard Sharkey), George, Laddie (Sandra), and Veronica (Howard Spence).
Paul leaves to mourn his passing: daughter Shianne and Les, granddaughter Christine Nechvatal and Blair Yaganiski, great-grandchildren Mathew and Kiley Yaganiski, grandson Jonathan Nechvatal, brother Laddie Helmeczi, sister Mary Sharkey, plus many, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
