Mae Kaczur Obituary

MAE (Lomenda) (Banga) Kaczur was born on January 11, 1939 in Esterhazy, SK. Mae was the firstborn of 12 children to Edward and Ella Lomenda of Stockholm, SK.  Mae was a great help on the family farm from a very young age.  She played a large part in looking after her siblings, helping to feed, change diapers, wash clothes, cook and bake bread.  Whenever she got a chance, she escaped to reading…books were her passion until a very short time ago.  Mae attended Swea School near the family farm.  As a young woman, Mae attended the occasional dance at Pioneer Hall where she met Lloyd Banga who shortly thereafter began calling on her. Mae and Lloyd were married on May 12, 1959. They settled on a farm about 4 miles from Stockholm and had four children – Yvonne, Albert, Charlene and Kelly.

Mae was a very hard worker, raising 100’s of chickens, ducks and geese for the family table and for selling to others.  She had a very green thumb and always had a very huge garden from which she did much canning and preserving. She was a very good baker and one of her best skills was making thin bread and poppyseed layer cake. She also loved to crochet and has crocheted miles of thread with her creations.

Mae’s love for her children was abundant and she was very proud of their accomplishments - always concerned and encouraging. She sacrificed much for her family and worked hard every day of her life. Mae helped Lloyd even more when he lost his arm, by going to work in Stockholm at the local grocery store where she worked for 25 years before she retired.  On August 18, 1991, Mae lost her husband Lloyd.

Mae later met George Kaczur, aka Papa George and they were married on January 1, 1993.  They moved to Stockholm where they ‘farmed’ their very large lot.  They had a huge garden and loved to entertain and have company over for horseshoes or cards.  They also enjoyed going to rodeos all over the area. Mae was active in the Stockholm Lions Club for a number of years.  She became a very important person to the Kaczur family as a stepmother/grandmother.

On May 21, 1999, Mae suffered a shattering loss of her son Kelly in a tragic car accident. She also suffered a major health concern in 2000. She survived the breast cancer but started her     lifelong battle with Congestive Heart Failure and kidney problems. George passed away in April of 2004 and Mae moved to Regina shortly thereafter to be closer to family and medical care.

Mae met Ross Pettigrew in 2009. They became companions who enjoyed fishing, camping, birdwatching, casino shows, and of course, gardening.  Mae gardened indoors (houseplants) and outdoors and looked after their home until early this year when her health began to fail. Mae passed away on November 20, 2023 at the Pasqua Hospital from her battle with CHF.  She was a very loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister and friend to many, and will be very sadly missed and remembered by all.

Mae is predeceased by her parents, Ed and Ella Lomenda, infant brother Joseph, husband Lloyd Banga, son Kelly Banga, brothers Richard and Douglas Lomenda and husband George Kaczur.

Mae is survived by her partner Ross Pettigrew; daughter Yvonne (Wayne) Mechalchuk - daughters Melissa (Steve) Gelowitz, Kristin (Mark) Miller and children Mason/Eliya; son Albert (Tracey) Banga – children Daegan/Kayleigh; daughter Charlene Crosby – children Dakota/Darby; daughter-in law Denise (Kelly) Banga - grandson Branden (Jessie) Banga and children – Brielle/Jaxton/Beckum, step-grandchildren Chris and Brittany Desnomie; step-son Bryan (Bev) Kaczur – Pam (Steve) Barratt – Carson/Riley; Sherri Kaczur; Tracy (Dylan) Van Brunt – Owen/Olivia; brothers/sisters Rodney, Robert, Charles, Judy, Edward, Valerie, Jack, Lois and their spouses, numerous nieces and nephews.
