Leo Joseph Roussin was born on July 11, 1945 in St. Rose Du Lac to Wilfred Roussin and Delia (Tourond). He was the third child of twelve. The family moved from St. Rose to St. Lazare. After a major flood in 1955, the family moved to Atwater where he attended school and learned to speak English as the family spoke French. In 1964, the family settled in Gerald and there he met his wife Darlene. Leo married Darlene Lippai on August 13, 1966 and they resided on the Lippai family farm until the children were ready to attend school. In 1970, Leo and Darlene moved to Esterhazy where the family resides today. Leo took great pride in his family spending every Sunday in Gerald with his parents and on the Lippai Family farm. He cherished the photos, cards and mementos from his family saving these special memories as they were dear to his heart.
Leo started working at a young age for local farmers in order to help support his family. Later he worked for Schentag Construction in Esterhazy and was eventually hired by I.M.C. in 1966. He attended Kelsey institute and completed his Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) Trade and continued working at the mine where he was employed for over 41 years. Leo loved the time spent helping Frank Lippai on the farm. He retired from the mine on July 10, 2007. Leo was a strong advocate for unions and enjoyed serving as the recording secretary for the local (Unifor local 55) and took pride in working with his nephew Bryan Glazer. After a couple years of retirement, he worked summers on the golf course for Carlton Trail Regional Park until he became too ill to work.
Leo loved sports, cheering for his favorite teams the Habs, Blue Jays and the Riders. He played hockey for the senior Flyers and then Old Flyers in the winter and Fastball with the Gerald Comets in the summers. Eventually he became a volunteer coach for Minor Hockey, Minor Ball, Senior Flyers and the Gerald Comets. He loved coaching the kids and did so for over 20 years. Later in life, he took up golfing, fishing, camping and travelling.
