Julia Chomiak, late of Esterhazy, Saskatchewan passed away on February 22, 2020 at 88 years of age.
Julia was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Mary Chomiak, her sisters Lydia (Peter) Kozak, Vera (Nestor) Johnson, Christina (in infancy), brother Harold Chomiak and brother-in-law Joseph Schentag. She leaves to mourn her sister Minnie Schentag of Winnipeg, Manitoba, sister-in-law Margaret Chomiak of Ancaster, Ontario, eleven nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews.
Julia was born on July 1, 1931 on a farm east of Gerald where her family had settled after immigrating to Canada from Ukraine in 1930.
Julia had cerebral palsy and spent much of her life in care facilities; South Saskatchewan Hospital in Weyburn, Training Centre in Moose Jaw, Northpark Centre in Prince Albert and in later years Thievins’s Approved Home in Stockholm and then the Centennial Care Home in Esterhazy.
Although Julia never spoke, she had her own unique way of communicating. She enjoyed being with people and participated in activities with the best of her ability.
Julia spent hours playing with her dolls and stuffed toys. She loved music, outdoor excursions and weekly church services. She was known for her tidy and well-organized room. She was particular about what she would wear and would not leave her room without jewelry.
Julia was usually a cheerful person and was affectionately known as “Jewels” by nurses and staff.
Julia’s family thank all those who provided comforting care for Julia, Dr. Mandi Nel, nurses and staff at the Centennial Care Home and Rick and Shirley Thievin. Your warm love and compassion for Julia were much appreciated. You were her “special family”.
