Jerry (Wei Sing) Wong was born in a small village in Guang Zhou province in China. In 1952, Jerry left his home and journeyed to Canada as a 15-year-old to join his grandfather in Winnipeg. During the day, he learned English and, in the evening, he worked many hours in a restaurant. He spent several years employed at the Shanghai Restaurant in Winnipeg before moving to Esterhazy to run the Galaxy Restaurant with his partners. Here he met the love of his life, a young waitress named Carol Chalpan.
In 1964, Jerry and Carol got married. They welcomed three daughters Glenda, Kami, and Tracy during their busy life balancing a growing business and family. Jerry took pride in his business, worked hard, and enjoyed serving his customers his famous rice pudding, deluxe hamburgers, and Chinese food. On his rare days off, he was an avid hunter, golfer, and bowler, competing in bowling tournaments across the province.
In 1987 after 25 years in business, Jerry retired and sold the restaurant to take up a well-deserved life of leisure. He enjoyed playing golf almost every day and became a regular fixture on the golf course, socializing and joking with everyone. People often say you could hear his laughter before you could see him!
Family was everything to Jerry. His family continued to grow after his retirement. Jerry welcomed two sons-in-law, Dave and Dean, who became his fishing partners and cribbage rivals. Soon he embraced his most cherished role yet, being a grandpa. He was proud of his grandkids Kayla, Dalaney, and Kael and loved spending time with them. They were the joy of his life and each one of them had a special place in his heart. He was the head and heart of the family, and he leaves an empty seat at the Wong table that can never be filled.
He was predeceased by his parents Jake and Bo Sung, brother Grant, sister Alice, and granddaughter Kayla. He is survived by wife Carol, three daughters Glenda (Dave) of Esterhazy, Kami (Dean) of Yorkton, Tracy of Penticton, and grandchildren Dalaney (Riley), and Kael, and his siblings Tina, Simon, and Cheryl.
At Jerry’s request, the service will be a private family gathering. In lieu of flowers, friends can donate to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Esterhazy.
