George William Lake of Esterhazy, Saskatchewan passed away December 25, 2021, at St. Anthony’s Hospital, Esterhazy.
George was born September 15, 1936, in Weyburn, Saskatchewan to Charles and Esther (Mantasari) Lake. George was raised by his Aunty Nora and Uncle Albert Holpainen after his mother took sick and was unable to look after him.
George married Dorothy Urzada September 2, 1961, and they farmed south of Esterhazy, in the Grove Park District, Fin Colony. They had four children Rick (Carla), Greg (Andrea), Kimberley, and Lorraine (Ken).
While on the farm they enjoyed hunting and snowmobiling. Rick, Greg, Kimberley, and Lorraine (Lollipop) recall memories of truck rides in the fields, stopping for a wiener roast and Kool-Aid which was such a treat. Many hay wagon rides were had. Seeking out abandoned homes was a family adventure and George would tell them that witches lived in the old houses. They would often go camping north of Kenosee Lake with friends.
George and Dorothy separated in 1976 and later divorced after which Dorothy remained on the farm.
In 1977, George met Patricia Hanis. Pat had a daughter, Treena from a previous marriage and the three became a family. Pat and George went on to have two more children and were blessed with Brent (Colleen) and Nicole (Nathan).
Treena, Brent, and Nikki remember the many rides in the county looking in abandoned houses and going hunting with their parents. Dad would tell them about the beaver dams, and what animals had made tracks. Summers were spent at Good Spirit Lake. George and Pat remained together until her passing in 1992.
Years passed and George met Lorraine (Luhtala) and they married June 26, 2004. Together they never had children, but all the dogs and cats were their babies. They had many friends and liked to socialize and entertain. They opened their home to many friends in need.
One thing that everyone who knew George would agree, he would always open his arms to help anyone down on their luck if they needed a meal or a bed. He never held a grudge.
George will be remembered by his family, as well as by his grandchildren; Tristin, Jennifer (Dave), Ryan (Sara-Lynn), Stephanie (Rob) and Taylor; and one great grandchild Emery.
