Frank Farkas Obituary

Frank was born February 27, 1944 to Frank and Elizabeth (Helmeczi) Farkas. He was born on the farm northwest of Stockholm. In the spring of 1944, when he was about three months old, the family moved to a farm one mile east of Dubuc. Frank attended school in Dubuc along with his brothers and sister.

When Frank left school, he began work with the Department of Highways out of Rosthern. At that time, Frank’s brother Zoltan and sister Christina were both teachers taking university summer school classes in Saskatoon.  Many Sunday afternoons were spent visiting in Rosthern or in Saskatoon.

Frank loved the north country with its trees, forests, lakes and wildlife, and just being out in the fresh air. Frank also worked on the highways driving a gravel truck by Lanigan and later from Yorkton to Canora and Kamsack.

The north drew him and he decided to work at the nickel mine in Thompson, Manitoba.  He was a good welder, learning from his father who had apprenticed the blacksmithing trade in Hungary and continued it in Canada near Waldron, Stockholm and Dubuc.

Frank worked in Thompson 14 years.  He drove home to Dubuc for short visits with his brand new truck.  On one of those weekends, his uncle Roy from Regina mentioned to him that he could work at Case in Regina as a heavy duty mechanic.  Roy was a salesman for Case.  Frank took up the offer and started work in Regina.

On his way home to the farm on weekends, Frank would stop in at Neudorf, where Don and Christina taught school, for Saturday dinner. The children loved his company and he would often read bed time stories to them.

Frank always had a cheerful disposition.  He loved to dress smartly, always in dress clothes and western plaid shirts. He loved music and singing country and western songs. He played guitar. Frank came from a very musical family where his dad played the violin and everyone learned to play.  Many evenings were spent playing and singing.

Frank was a traveler.  He liked to see new places.  He travelled throughout Canada and the United States.

In later years, Frank developed health issues, so he was placed in a care home in Canora for several months. He was transferred to St. Paul Lutheran Care Home in Melville.  His sister Christina took him to her home every Sunday for supper and he always enjoyed playing his guitar at her home.

The Care Home staff loved Frank’s cheerfulness.  Chaplain Dawn said Frank loved the chapel service, especially its music.

Frank was predeceased by his parents, brothers Alfred, Zoltan, Robert, and Edward, brother-in-law Don Morgan, sister-in-law Dorothy Prince (Farkas), as well as many aunts and uncles.

Left to mourn his passing and cherish his memory are his sister Christina Morgan, brother Daniel (Ellie), nephew Wayne (Suzanne) and family, nephew Don and grandnephew Will, niece Linda (Grant), nephew Darwin (Rachel) and family, niece Lynn (Shane) and family, and nieces Monica, Lisa, Barbie and Amanda and their families, Aunt Mary Sharkey, Uncle Laddie Helmeczi, Uncle Jim Tuckor, and numerous cousins.

Frank passed away peacefully Thursday, December 26, 2024.  Special thank you to Dr. Eshawesh, Dr. Houshmindi and the St. Paul Lutheran Care Home staff.  Their love and support for Frank is greatly appreciated.
