Welcome to the memorial page for

Ethel Annie Yanyu

November 11, 1929 ~ September 21, 2017 (age 87) 87 Years Old

Ethel was born on November 11, 2017 1929 to Alex and Mary-Anne (Pinke) Shivak on the family farm, 1 mile west of Stockholm. She was the 5th of 7 children in the family. She attended school in Stockholm and often talked about how she walked through snow and rain to get there.

On July 19, 1950 Ethel married Paul Yanyu and 1 year later they moved to Ontario. Both of their daughters were born there, Susan in 1956 and Annette in 1965.  Their first home was in Hamilton followed by Stoney Creek. During the 16 years they lived in   Ontario, Ethel and Paul first worked on a tobacco farm together and later she used her sewing skills at a clothing factory and sewing doll clothes for a company by the name of “Dianna Doll Clothes” from home.

In 1967 Ethel and Paul returned to Stockholm. They later moved to Esterhazy making it home for 45 years. Ethel taught sewing classes for Parkland Community College for a few years and later began a career working with Home Care as a Care Aide and later as a Client Assessor.

Ethel was a woman of many talents. As a child she loved to draw and later displayed her artistic nature through beautiful flower gardens around her home. She and Paul grew a bountiful garden each year and gladly shared the produce with whoever needed.  Ethel’s talents extended to sewing lovely clothing for herself, her daughters and her grandchildren.  In later years she created colorful quilts which she made for each member of her family.  Ethel was a fantastic cook. Her Hungarian heritage always showing through with her mouth watering tortes, pies and poppy seed buns, not to mention the cabbage buns which Paul always requested. Ethel and Paul spent many hours playing cards, which was one of her favorite pastimes. This enabled them to nurture their many friendships through the years. She loved to golf and bowl and enjoyed watching all sports…football, hockey and especially loved her baseball, the Blue Jays games always on. Ethel was a very giving and compassionate person. She spent many hours at the church, hospital and care home volunteering her time. She was always there to lend a helping hand.

Family was very important to Ethel. Her and Paul traveled to Alberta to visit Susan and Dave and enjoyed exploring new places and experiencing different things with them.  Ethel was delighted to become a grandmother. Her grandson Brett was born in 1987 and granddaughter Chelsey arrived in 1989. Many hours were spent following her grandchildren with Annette and Bryan, watching their many activities which also became a social outing for her and Paul.  They became part of the “Grandparent Circle” at these events.  Ethel was able to experience being a great-grandmother and always referred to them as “the little ones.”

A few years back while reminiscing about her life experiences in Saskatchewan and Ontario she smiled and said, “We’ve really had an interesting life.”

Ethel is survived by her two daughters, Susan (Dave Watson), Annette (Bryan Glazer), her grandson Brett Glazer (Kimberley), granddaughter Chelsey Wiebe (Keenan) and great-grandchildren Marek and Alyza Glazer.  Sisters Irene, Kathleen, Ida, brother Donald (Marlene) and sister-in-law Marguerite; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her husband Paul, parents Alex and Mary-Anne Shivak, brothers Joe and Alex. Her father and mother-in-law Andrew and Annie Yanyu and many brother and sister-in-laws.

May You Rest in Peace
