Elizabeth (Liz) Ethel Bernath

Liz was born on February 18, 1923 on the family farm by Melville, Saskatchewan to John and Elizabeth Abdai.  She attended school until grade eight when she quit to help at home with her brothers and sisters.

She married Emil Bernath on October 25, 1945.  They lived in the Kinbrae area, where they welcomed eleven children into their family.  In 1962 they moved to Atwater, where they remained until they retired.  Lizzie like to sew, knit, crochet and quilt.  She loved to cook and bake and made everyone welcome to her home.

If one word describes her, it is family.  She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Not only did she raise her big family, she took in foster children and helped raise her younger sisters and two grandsons.

In 1988 Emil and Liz retired and moved into Esterhazy.  This chapter of her life was filled with bowling, bingo, and the Golden Jets.  She was a CWL member for over 40 years and she belonged to the Hospital Auxiliary.

After 56 years of marriage, she lost the love of her life in 2001.  She remained in her home until she was 90 then decided to move into Sumner Place, where she thrived, visiting, playing cards and organizing bingo there.

In September 2018, Liz had a fall that prevented her from returning to Sumner, and she moved into the Care Home in Esterhazy.

Lizzie left this earth peacefully with family by her side.

She had a long and happy life that we all celebrate today.

She was predeceased by her husband Emil in 2001, daughter Jeannette Gelowitz in 2008 and grandson Robert Ethier in 2009.  She is survived by Gerry (Lorraine) Gelowitz, Jim (Donna) Bernath, Marie (Albert) Ethier, Don (Luella) Bernath, Linda (Chris) Babyak, Blair (Peggy)  Bernath, Joyce (Ross) Rausch, Joan (Linus) Duchek, Kelly (Linda) Bernath, Rodney (Lorie) Bernath, Brent (Bibianna) Bernath; 36   grandchildren; 47 great grandchildren; two sisters, Eleanor (Ken) Leftwich, Carol Cole & Gordon; one brother, Albert Abdai & Dave.
